Marshmallow Run

From a squishy runner to a moving Mallow

Development notes from Marshmallow Run: what changed, how it affects a run, and which parts of the game stayed the same. These notes describe the current website preview; they are not an Android version history.

Arms, legs, and a more natural stride

The original marshmallow body now has arms and legs. The animation developed in three stages: the original limbless look, the first moving limbs, and the current human-like motion. Arms counter-swing against the legs, elbows bend, and knees flex as each leg comes forward.

The character previews and running characters use the same drawing helpers, so a skin keeps its identity in the shop and on the trail. Limbs are decorative: they do not enlarge the collision area or change jump controls. Jumbo Coach also keeps the standard collision area despite his larger appearance.

A more expressive toasted crash

When a marshmallow hits a campfire, it turns burnt and smoky. Its arms now flail during the toasted animation, with bent elbows rather than a rigid pose. The game still ends with “You Want S'more??”; the animation changes the reaction, not the rules for surviving a hit.

Four scenes across 20 levels

The journey now moves from a campground at levels 1–5 to snowy mountains at 6–10, a beach at 11–15, and desert dunes at 16–20. The background fades between scenes while the run continues. Continuing from a crashed level selects the matching scenery instead of always showing the campground.

The expanded desert stretch adds five difficulty tiers, ending at Endless Dunes. Each raises the speed cap and reduces obstacle spacing. The level guide lists the current distance milestones rather than relying on the scenery or level name to guess your progress.

Characters with different trade-offs

Retro Mallow Pilot jumps higher, Airport Ramp Worker moves faster, and AARP Mallow slows the game down. Jumbo Coach is a gym-teacher marshmallow who runs alongside the player at levels 10–14 before becoming available for purchase at level 15. These join the original ability-focused skins, including Mint Puff's triple jump and Cocoa Dip's double-value coins.
